His father, Jean Sulpice JACQUAT had been imprisoned during the Franco-Prussian War and was glad that his son would not have to serve. The family was prepared to pay the necessary fines because he had left.

When Hippolyte left France, his sister Marie JACQUAT became the family secretary in France. She wrote often to him about the events that were happening in the town and area around where he was born. Hippolyte saved these letters and it is from those letters that the following information is based.
