1Obituary Metamora Herald, Thursday, 13 Jun 1893. "Obituary

As the tide of time rolls on, it bears away in its heaving bosom, one after another of our number, to the spirit world.  In its restlessness and mysterious morings it waits not to confer with flesh and blood, nor seek the approval of man.  Thus it becomes our sad duty to record the departure of Mrs. Elisa Jacquat, wife of Hippolyte Jacquat of Metamora.

Mrs. Jacquat was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Springer, and was born in Saccre Union, France, May 5, 1859.  With her faith firmly resting on Jesus and leaning on his strong arm, she was gently lead to the celestial kingdom, and crowned on the eighth of June, 1893.

Mrs. Jacquat's ancestors were of the line of christian reformers that came into notoriety in the great reformation of the 19th century, known as the Mennonite branch of the Christian church.  At the age of fifteen, our sister recognized her christian duty and privilege and consecrated her soul to God and the church in 1874, the same year that her father was called to the spirit world.

She came with her mother and other members of the family to America in 1876 and was married to her now sorrowing husband November 11, 1882.  Her father and four sisters preceded her in to the realms of the future, also two of her own darling babies.  Her aged mother, two sisters and two brothers still survive her.

Mrs. Jacquat was educated in both the French and German language and could talk them fluently.  She was a christian lady of refined habits and manners and her home and home influence speak in unmistakable terms of her sweet spirit, christian culture and dignified motherhood.  During her sickness, which she bore with christian fortitude, she possessed that natural desire to remain with earthly loved ones and yet by the sweet leadings of the Divine Spirit she reached the point and was able to say, "I am reconciled" and later on said "I am ready and would like to go."

The evening before her departure she called her little daughter Mary to the bedside, and Jacob like, placed her hands upon her head and in the devotion of a mother's love invoked God's blessing and consigned her to God's care and Fatherly keeping.  After giving her devoted husband instructions relative to her funeral service, family interests and especially touching her only surviving child, she laid her head on the bosom of Christ and sweetly entered into the rest of the Saints.  In her departure society has lost a refined christian member, the aged mother a loving daughter and the home an affectionate devoted wife and mother.

Her funeral obsequies were held in the Union church at Metamora by a union of ministers and people in large number, who met to pay respect to christian worth, after which we laid her remains to rest by the side of her two babies in Oakwood cemetery to await the resurrection of the just.  The writer solicits prayer for the aged mother, sorrowing husband, daughter and other friends.  The prayer of the writer is that we all like sister Jacquat may live with our lives consecrated to Christ, and Christ only and when like her we come to lay down the cross and take up the crown it may be in the full fruition of heavenly joy.

W.A.B."

Mrs Springer (nee Suisse) was born in Nolveyer Department of the Meurthe, France, January 25th 1815.  At the age of fifteen she was received in the Mennonite church, to which faith she remained loyal to her last day.

In 1833 she was married to Joseph Springer.  Their union was blessed with nine children, five of them have departed this life before their mother, and four survive her.  Her husband died in 1874 and in 1876 she emigrated to this country with her youngest daughter.

She was a charitable woman never refusing aid to anyone who asked it of her.  Her life was one of hardships and sorrows, but she was a good Christian and bore her sorrows and trials patiently hoping to be rewarded in the future world."
